WOMAG has announced a new exclusive partnership with Mekitec, a global top-tier manufacturer of AI-driven X-ray inspection systems for the food and packaging industries. Founded in Finland and operating globally across more than 40 countries, Mekitec is recognised for combining advanced AI software with innovative X-ray inspection technology.
The partnership expands WOMAG’s inspection portfolio with a range of compact, high-performance X-ray systems designed to deliver accurate contaminant detection without the cost and complexity often associated with traditional X-ray equipment.
Mekitec’s approach combines advanced image analysis software with simplified hardware design, reducing reliance on expensive components while maintaining high inspection performance. This allows manufacturers to access X-ray technology at a lower overall cost, with reduced maintenance requirements and easier integration into production lines.
By offering a practical and more accessible entry point into X-ray inspection, the partnership helps bridge the gap between traditional metal detection and full-scale X-ray inspection technology, giving manufacturers greater flexibility in how they approach product safety and quality control.
Mekitec is also among the very few companies in the world to hold a U.S. patent covering AI-powered X-ray image analysis technology, reinforcing its position as a leader in next-generation inspection innovation.
Systems including the MEKI™ ONE and MIDMEKI™ are designed for a wide range of applications, including:
• Packaged and processed foods
• Ready meals and bakery products
• Products in metallised or aluminium packaging
• High-moisture or high-salt products
• Multi-product trays and larger packaged items
The systems can detect a broad range of contaminants including metal, glass, stone, bone, and dense plastics, even in challenging packaging formats.
A key advantage of X-ray inspection over traditional metal detection is the ability to identify non-metal contaminants and perform additional product quality checks during inspection. X-ray systems can also inspect products in metallised packaging, where conventional metal detectors are often limited.
A particularly important application is glass-in-glass detection. Mekitec systems can identify glass contamination inside glass jars and bottles, helping manufacturers reduce product recall risk and improve consumer safety in applications where metal detection cannot provide sufficient protection.
In addition to contaminant detection, X-ray inspection can support product integrity checks such as fill level monitoring, missing product detection, and product verification, helping manufacturers improve quality control and reduce waste.
The systems can also perform seal inspection and seal integrity checks, helping manufacturers identify trapped product, incomplete seals, or packaging defects before products leave the production line. This supports improved shelf life, reduced leakage risk, and greater confidence in overall packaging quality, particularly for ready meals, trays, and vacuum-packed products.
The partnership strengthens WOMAG’s offering in inspection and quality assurance technology, providing UK manufacturers with access to more cost-effective X-ray inspection systems backed by local support and application expertise.
