A load cell is an electromechanical sensor that converts a mechanical force (such as weight) into an electrical signal. When a load is applied, the load cell’s internal strain gauges deform slightly, changing their electrical resistance. This change is measured and converted into a weight reading by a connected indicator or controller.
What load cell capacity do I need?
As a general rule, select a load cell with a capacity at least 20–25% above your maximum expected load to allow for dynamic forces, shock loading, and overload protection. For multi-load-cell systems (e.g. a 4-cell platform scale), the total system capacity is divided across the cells — contact our team for guidance on your specific application.
What is the difference between compression and tension load cells?
Compression load cells measure forces pushing down on them and are used in platform scales, floor scales, and vessel weighing. Tension load cells measure pulling forces and are used in hanging or suspended weighing applications such as crane scales and hopper systems. Shear beam load cells can handle both and are commonly used in bench and platform scale builds.
What does ATEX-certified mean for load cells?
ATEX certification indicates the load cell is approved for use in potentially explosive atmospheres, such as those found in chemical plants, fuel storage, and pharmaceutical manufacturing.
